The network topology recommended consists of a redundant core with building blocks of layered routers and switches as shown in Figure : 1. This is the defacto standard for network design supporting both modularity and reuse.

Real networks are far more complex with many more nodes and services. In addition, real deployments typically have legacy constraints, multiple sites, and heterogeneous equipment. It is beyond the scope of this document to detail solutions for the potential configurations of entire networks.
