Creating a new virtual machine on Hyper-V

Last Updated : Jun 05, 2026 |

About this task

Create a Hyper-V virtual machine for RHEL and the Avaya Aura® Device Services application.

The virtual machine specifications must meet the requirements for the Avaya Aura® Device Services profile that you are planning to use. For more information, see Avaya Aura Device Services virtual machine resource requirements.

Before you begin

  • Obtain an ISO image of the RHEL 8.4 or RHEL 8.10 operating system.

  • Create a Hyper-V virtual switch.

Procedure

  1. Start the Hyper-V Manager.
  2. On the Menu bar, click Action, and then click New > Virtual Machine.

The Hyper-V Manager displays the New Virtual Machine Wizard window.

  3. In the Specify Name and Location window, in Name, type a name of your choice for the virtual machine.
  4. Optional If you do not want to use the default location for the virtual machine, then select the Store the virtual machine in a different location check box and in Location, choose the appropriate location.
  5. Click Next.
  6. In the Specify Generation window, select a generation version for the virtual machine as appropriate.

For information about Hyper-V virtual machine generations, see Should I create a generation 1 or 2 virtual machine in Hyper-V.

    Important:

You cannot change the generation type of the virtual machine after creating it.

  7. Click Next.
  8. In the Assign Memory window, do the following:
    1. In Startup Memory, select the amount of RAM memory to allocate to your virtual machine.

The amount of memory must be equal or greater than the amount of memory required for the Avaya Aura® Device Services profile that you want to use.

    2. Select the Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine check box.
  9. Click Next.
  10. In the Configure Networking window, in Connection, select the virtual switch that you created in Creating a virtual switch.
  11. Click Next.
  12. In the Connect Virtual Hard Disk, do the following to create a primary virtual disk with the size of 125 Gb:
    1. Select Create a virtual hard disk.
    2. In Size, type 125.

This virtual hard disk corresponds to the /dev/sda disk on Avaya Aura® Device Services.

  13. Click Next.
  14. In Installation Options, select Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM.
  15. Select Image file and then specify the path to the RHEL 8.4 or RHEL 8.10 ISO image.
  16. Click Next.
  17. In the Summary window, verify the virtual machine data and then click Finish to create the virtual machine.

Result

Hyper-V creates a new virtual machine and displays it in the list of virtual machines in the Hyper-V Manager.
