Deploying EMS and SBC on KVM host using cockpit web console

Last Updated : Oct 09, 2025 |
Prolog information
Before you begin
  1. Download the KVM QCOW2 software image file to the local deployment server, as described in Software to download.
  2. Copy the downloaded KVM QCOW2 software image file to the ASP 130 R6 host in the storage directory: /var/lib/libvirt/images/.
  3. Create a copy of the image for each guest Virtual Machine (VM). For example, for a High Availability (HA) solution that consists of 1 EMS and 2 SBCs, there must be three copies of the qcow2 images.
The following is an example of the images for an HA system:
    /var/lib/libvirt/images/sbce-ems-24611.qcow2
    /var/lib/libvirt/images/sbce-sbc1-24611.qcow2
    /var/lib/libvirt/images/sbce-sbc2-24611.qcow2
Note:
The above .qcow2 is an example SBCE version. For the actual version, see the Software to download.
  1. Log in to the Cockpit web console.
  2. Click Virtual Machines and click Import VM.
  3. Enter the following details:
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    • Name: Enter a unique name. For example, EMS, SBC1, or SBC2.
    • Disk: Select the disk image.
    • Operating System: Select Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.10 (Oatpa).
    • Memory: Select the memory configuration. For more information, see VMware and KVM resource reservation specifications.
  4. Click Import and Edit.
  5. Change the firmware to UEFI.
  6. Enter the following CPU details and click Apply:
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    • vCPU maximum
    • vCPU count
    • Sockets
    • Cores per socket
    • Threads per core
    • Mode
  7. Add required network interfaces.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The number of required interfaces depends on the type of guest VM (EMS / SBC).
    • Interface Type: Select Bridge To LAN. Bridge to LAN provides a bridge from the guest VM directly onto the LAN.
    • Source: Select a configured bridge on the host. For creating bridges, see Appendix C: KVM networking configuration - Cockpit Web Console.
    • Model: Select virtio.
  8. Click Add.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
After configuring the guest VM for EMS and SBC, you can run the VM instance. Use the console to continue with EMS and SBC-specific configurations.
  9. Run the virsh command to get the status of guests (KVM).
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    For example:
    virsh list --all
     Id   Name         State
    ----------------------------
     39   EMS_New      running
     41   SBC1_24611   running
     42   SBC2_24611   running
  10. Configure networking on the host (KVM) and guests (SBC and EMS).
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
For more information, see Appendix C: KVM networking configuration - Cockpit Web Console.
