Changing the J100 phone firmware

Last Updated : Sep 18, 2024 |

About this task

Each release of IP Office includes a release of J100 firmware as part of its installation. By default, J100 phones connected to the IP Office will, if necessary, upgrade to that release of J100 firmware.

For example; IP Office R11.2 installs J100 R4.0.10.3.2 firmware, IP Office R12.1 installs J100 R4.1.6.

  • You can change the release of J100 firmware used by your IP Office. For example, if you require a fix that is part of a later J100 release or want to use a new J100 feature (see Alternate J100 phone firmware features).

  • This process assumes that you are using the IP Office system as the file server for J100 phone firmware. If using a separate file server (see File (Provisioning) server settings), copy the new firmware files to that server.

Procedure

  1. Download the J100 firmware from Avaya Support website (https://support.avaya.com).
  2. Unpack the J100 firmware file to a folder on your PC.
  3. Start IP Office Manager.
  4. Select File > Advanced > Embedded File Management
  5. Select the IP Office system and click OK.
  6. In the Folders window:
    • On a Linux-based server, navigate to /disk/system/primary.

    • On an IP500 V2, navigate to System SD/SYSTEM/PRIMARY.

  7. From the PC, drag the following files from the J100 firmware to the Files window.
    • If prompted to confirm replacing an existing file, click Yes. When completed, click Close.

    1. Drag and drop the J100Supgrade.txt file.
      • Alternatively, you can use NoUser source numbers to change the version numbers the IP Office writes into its auto-generated J100Supgrade.txt file. See NoUser source numbers.

    2. Repeat for all the .bin files.
    3. Repeat for all the .xml files except release.xml.
  8. Repeat the process for any other IP Office systems in the network.

Next Steps

The J100 when load the new files and upgrade either:

  • After restarting. See Restarting SIP phones.

  • Following an update policy. See J100 Series Phone Upgrade Settings.

  • Note: JEM24 button modules update using files transferred from the phone after the phone upgrades. That transfer takes up to 3-hours after which the module prompts the user to select when the module should upgrade.
