Alternatives to numeric fractions

Express fractions in words or as decimals whenever possible.
Examples
Tighten the screws one-quarter turn only.
The distance between the modem and the terminal must not exceed 6.5 feet.

Exception for large fractions or uncommon fractions

Words or decimal equivalents are impractical forms for large fractions or uncommon fractions. In these cases, use numerals and a slash to separate the numerator from the denominator, as in the phrase 7/64-inch hexadecimal wrench.

Hyphenating spelled-out fractions

Hyphenate spelled-out fractions, whether you use the fractions as adjectives or nouns.

Using multiple fractions in the same sentence

If you use two or more fractions in the same sentence, use the same form for each fraction.
