VLAN configuration

Last Updated : Feb 07, 2023 |

Configure virtual local area networks (VLAN) to segregate your network into distinct groups or domains. You can use VLANs to prioritize the network traffic into each of these distinct domains. For example, your network can have a Voice VLAN and a Data VLAN. If you group devices that have a common set of requirements into VLANs, your network has the following advantages:

  • Simplifies network design

  • Increases scalability

  • Improves security

  • Improves network management

The IEEE 802.1Q networking standard describes VLANs. IEEE 802.1Q details the 802.1Q protocol about how the Ethernet frames get an additional four-byte tag inserted at the beginning of the frame. This additional VLAN tag describes the VLAN ID for a particular device and the priority of the VLAN-tagged frame. Voice and video traffic typically get a higher priority in the network because they are subject to degradation caused by network jitter and delay.
