You can configure Avaya IP phones and Avaya Aura® Communication Manager to support redundancy. Configure the phones to register simultaneously with the following:
Two Avaya Aura® Session Manager SIP proxies
Two Session Manager instances and one Branch Session Manager instance
One Session Manager instance and one Branch Session Manager instance
If the phone loses connection to the primary Session Manager, the phone establishes a connection with the second Session Manager. If the second Session Manager is unavailable, the phone establishes a connection with the third Session Manager. The third Session Manager is a Branch Session Manager.
You can use a non-Avaya Aura® proxy as a survivable proxy. When the phone loses connection with Session Manager, the phone registers to the non-Avaya Aura® proxy and continues the service with minimal disruption. You can configure non-Avaya Aura® proxies as the following:
One Session Manager instance and one non-Avaya Aura® proxy
Two Session Manager instances and one non-Avaya Aura® proxy

Call preservation
If the phone loses connection with Session Manager during a call, the phone attempts to sustain the audio path between the phones to preserve the call. Preserving a call is a best-effort service because the audio path can be lost. The phone does not support additional call features for a preserved call, for example, conference call, call transfer, and call forward.
