Recognizing new hardware devices

Last Updated : May 26, 2024 |

About this task

Use this procedure if externally powered devices, such as disk drives and tape drives, are not recognized during a RHEL installation. This problem might occur if:

  • The devices are not connected to power

  • The devices are not turned on

  • If you add a new port board to the computer as part of an upgrade or addition

If you discover that a hardware device is not being recognized try rebooting the system. If the hardware device is still not being recognized try rebooting from the software disc and reinstalling RHEL.

Procedure

  1. Reboot the system by entering: shutdown -r now

    The system reboots.

  2. Log on as root.
    Important:

You cannot directly log on as root from a remote connection. You must log on using an administered CMS user ID, then use su - root to log on with root privileges.

  3. Enter the encryption passphrase if the auto-unlock feature is disabled.
