Best practices for backup

  • Before you perform a backup, run the copy running-config startup-config command. This action ensures that the backup includes the current running configuration and allows you to check whether the configuration uses the default password.

  • Insert the USB drive into a motherboard USB port and run the following command to verify that the Branch Gateway detects the USB drive formatted as FAT16 or FAT32: show usb all

  • Run the following command to list the directory contents: dir usbdevice [directory]

  • When performing the backup, run the show system command to determine whether the gateway uses a Compact Flash to store announcements. If the gateway does not use Compact Flash, the Compact Flash Memory status displays not installed or disabled. You need this information when restoring a new gateway from a USB drive if the gateway is not yet registered to Communication Manager.

  • Verify the software load in the show system command output. To restore the complete configuration to a new board, ensure that the software load is the same or newer. If the software load is older, Branch Gateway does not support certain features and might ignore their configurations. Store the downloadable software image in the USB drive backup directory.

  • Run the show fips-mode command to determine the FIPS mode status.

  • Before extracting the USB drive from the gateway, run the safe-removal usb usbdevice0 command to prevent Branch Gateway file corruption.

Note:

Maintain current backups to avoid using out-of-date data during a restore. When creating a backup directory, consider including the backup date in the directory name. If you restore a configuration that contains old, forgotten user passwords, you cannot log in. To resolve this, you must perform a manual nvram init operation using the dedicated jumper on the motherboard.
