Style standards

Last Updated : Sep 07, 2022 |

The English language includes grammatical and word constructions that, when translated, can result in cumbersome and time-consuming attempts to guess at and approximate the intended meaning. These standards contain some of the most common linguistic ambiguities that can cause problems for a global audience.

Writing for a global audience requires a clear, usable structure and wording. Ambiguities in grammar, punctuation, or terminology can cause misunderstandings and frustration. Translation of content into other languages requires that your text:

  • Is easy to translate accurately.

  • Is ready for machine translation, which cannot decipher intended meanings from ambiguous text.

  • Is clear and easily understood by all readers, including those whose native language is not English.

  • Uses terminology consistent with other Avaya documentation, online help, and content.

To prepare information for an international audience, follow the rules and suggestions in this document. With these guidelines, you ensure that Avaya documents always use:
  • A consistent writing style

  • Standard terminology

  • A controlled set of grammar rules
