Format for time zone names

Last Updated : May 13, 2020 |

Do not abbreviate the names of time zones.

Use lowercase letters to designate time zones unless the name of the time zone includes a proper noun.

Do not specify daylight time or standard time. For example, say eastern time and not eastern standard time or eastern daylight time.

Examples

Central time

Eastern time

Greenwich mean time

Mountain time

Pacific time

Exception for internal communications

Avaya is based in New Jersey. Therefore, use the eastern time zone to identify the time for a company event, unless the event takes place in another country. If the event takes place in another country, use the local time. Include the time zone in parentheses after the clock time, and use the format that the following example shows.

Example

The all-employee audiocast begins at 10 a.m. (U.S. Eastern time).
