click vs. select

Last Updated : Aug 29, 2022 |

Be as specific as possible when writing instructions. Use the appropriate verb for the device you are describing. For example, click is mouse-specific and tap or swipe is for mobile devices and touchscreens. If you are describing mobile and desktop interfaces in the same procedure, use select as an input-neutral term.

Continue to use select when you mean to:
  • Mark text for operations such as copy or delete.

  • Choose an option from a check box.

Examples

Select the text that you want to copy and then press Ctrl+C.

Select the Spaces check box.
