Description and usage

A field is an element where you enter a value.

In most situations, use the and field. Adding the label is especially important with a complex interface or when the user is working with a page or window that has different types of elements.

You can omit the label in the following types of situations:

  • When the user is completing multiple fields in a row, you can instruct the user to complete the following fields and then list the field names without repeating the and field.

  • When the user is filling out self-explanatory information, you can simplify the step to describe the action without reiterating the name of the field.

  • When describing a simple login page where the fields are obvious. In this case, the user will know where to enter their username and password.
