Person is a grammatical category that defines the subject of the sentence.

  • When you write in the first person, you are the subject of the sentence. In the first person, you use either the singular pronoun I or the plural pronoun we.

  • When you write in the second person, the subject of the sentence is the person or the persons to whom you are speaking. In the second person, you usually use the pronoun you. In procedures, the subject you is usually understood.

  • When you write in the third person, the subject of the sentence is the person or the persons about whom you are speaking. In the third person, you usually use nouns such as user or system administrator.
