among vs. between

Use between in the following ways:

  • To compare two or more items

  • To denote a one-to-one relationship

  • To indicate a period of time or some other range

  • To describe a position or spatial relationship

Use among when the emphasis is on undefined or non-specific relationships. Among is often used for items that are viewed as a group or to indicate belonging to a group.
