Jargon vs. slang

Last Updated : Jan 14, 2022 |

The difference between jargon and slang is not always clear. Usually, slang is more informal and consists of established words to which new and often unrelated meanings are assigned. Always replace slang with a standard technical term. To avoid the use of slang:

  • Do not invent new words to help you explain concepts. For example, do not use Avayatize to indicate the look-and-feel of Avaya products or branding.

  • Do not assign a nonstandard or a figurative meaning to an existing word. For example, using bridge to indicate a conferencing system.

When you assign new or unfamiliar meanings to established words, the result is usually slang. Unlike jargon, slang is unacceptable. You cannot be sure that your readers will understand slang in the way that you intend. Slang makes your content vague, ambiguous, and difficult to translate properly. Slang is also quickly outdated, and then becomes even more obscure. Replace slang with established terms or specific information.
