When to use initial capital letters

Use an initial capital letter for:

Almost all words in a document title, except for words such as “the”, “and”, “or”, and “for”.

The first word in a chapter title, section title, or other title within your document.

An example of a chapter or section title is: Initial setup

Specific references to an appendix if you are including the associated letter or name.

Do not capitalize general references to words such as appendix.

  • The last section of this appendix contains maintenance procedures.

The first word:

  • In a sentence or step

  • In alt text or a caption

  • In a bullet

  • After a colon

Note:

Where possible, rewrite content that begins with a case-sensitive lowercase word. If you cannot rewrite the content, do not capitalize the first word.

  • Preferred: The directory var/www/html contains upgrade files.

  • Discouraged: var/www/html is a directory that contains upgrade files.

Product, application, and feature names.

  • Avaya Collaborative Video runs on a Windows-based computer.

  • You can use Network Call Redirection (NCR) to reroute calls on the public network.

The names of menus, windows, pages, fields, buttons, and other UI elements as appropriate.

Ensure that you use the same capitalization convention that is in the UI to prevent confusion for users.

  • In the Font area, enter the name of the font you want to use.

The names of keys on the computer keyboard.

Exception: Use a lowercase letter when instructing the user to type a letter unless the user must type a capital letter.
