Format for clock time

Last Updated : Dec 24, 2013 |

Use the 12-hour clock to express time. Include zeros for even hours and the abbreviation a.m. or p.m.

Examples

5:00 p.m.

6:25 a.m.

Exception for marketing content and internal communications

Do not include zeros for even hours, such as 8:00 a.m. Use, for example, 8 a.m. or 8 p.m. instead.

Exceptions for noon and midnight

Use the word noon instead of 12:00 p.m.

Use the word midnight instead of 12:00 a.m.

Exceptions for the 24-hour clock

If the situation calls for the 24-hour clock, use the phrase 24-hour time instead of military time. If you must use the 24-hour time system, use colons to separate hours from minutes. For example, say 14:00 hours and not 1400 hours.
