Do not use transitive verbs as intransitive verbs.

A transitive verb requires a direct object, which receives the action of the verb. Examples of transitive verbs include display, complete, update, and route. The meaning of a transitive verb is incomplete without a direct object.

An intransitive verb does not require a direct object. For example, the verbs arrive, go, appear, and sit are intransitive. Do not use appears to refer to something that is displayed on the screen in response to a user action.

The verb open can be used as a transitive verb and an intransitive verb. Do not use opens as an intransitive verb to describe the result of a step in a procedure.
