Communication Manager is now integrated with Avaya Aura® Media Server (MS), a software-based media application platform where all the media is processed on software, not on dedicated hardware. Avaya Aura MS is another type of media resource provider besides Media Gateways (MG).

Communication Manager sends a status message to each Avaya Aura® MS on the Communication Manager reporting list. The status message indicates whether Communication Manager is active or inactive for the specific media server.

Avaya Aura® MS serves both as a media server and a status keeper. Each server, whether the main server or the survivable server, sends the status information to Avaya Aura® MS and requests status information about other servers. Avaya Aura® MS is a conduit that transmits the information to Communication Manager when requested. Based on the status information received, each server processes survivability actions.
